James Z.

Minton's

Trumpeter

Wiry, lanky
eyes shut
fingers drift across the valves
mesmerized
feet tap in time

Midnight

Shining black leather
Oxfords shuffle around
glimpses of argyle
trumpets cry
above the swinging ride cymbal

Mute

the notes
spill out
quavering on the breeze
the bell lifts towards the sun
strains of blues whisk away
