Standing At Home

A chalk-lined rectangle
Creates the hearth of the field
Where batter is made hero.

Only here is the aroma of dirt and sweat
Combined with chalky white flour
Admired and appreciated.

The only audible noise is the
Thunderous pounding of the heart
Over the animated cheers of teammates.

Here is where nerves twist into excitement
Where fear is conquered by heart
And weakness is crushed by willpower.
