Zora Haque AwakeningCurled up inside her bunk
With only itchy blankets for warmth
The brave voyager clutches her pillow
In her sleep, gently rocking with the schooner.
Her eyes snap open.
Squeaks from the door
End her short-lived peace.
Restlessly swinging her legs over the
Congested bunk, she cannot fall asleep
Again. But now
The tumultuous waves have stopped.
She wonders if something is wrong.
Tip toe-ing up the stair, curiousity
Awakens her eyes.
The girl looks
Over the deck
Only to discover
Shy streaks of the sun
Peeking through the night’s fog
And casting shadows from hanging lines
Draped from mast to mast
She glides over the deck
And leaps into the sunlight
Basking in its soft warmth.
